Medical Services:

Certified Athletic Trainers have been integrated into athletic programs for students and are on campus every day at the High Schools. Trainers spearhead daily services, which encompass fitness training, injury prevention education, conditioning, nutrition education, and treatment of minor injuries. Students are referred to a physician as needed. Trainers are also present at team practices and home varsity games.

Trainers also play a vital part as trusted role models for the kids. When Team HEAL was first a presence at the schools, most kids were skeptical. However, soon the kids realized Team HEAL was there for them. Trust is an invaluable component of Team HEAL.

One On One

Educational Clinics:

Since one of the most critical factors in injury prevention involves education, Team HEAL's medical team, including its Athletic Trainers, present a series of educational clinics for student athletes and their parents. These clinics include emergency medical treatment, medical care for orthopedic injuries and problems, non-emergency medical needs, and information on nutrition and rehabilitation. This collective effort provides a valuable opportunity to build positive relationships, not only for the kids, but for the entire community.

Pre-Season Safety

Pre Season Health Screening:

Prior to Team HEAL, most of these athletes had not undergone a complete physical and many had pre-existing injuries. Some rather serious, such as a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). The ACL is a major stabilizing ligament of the knee, which prevents the lower leg bone from moving forward, dislocating the knee. Such an injury has serious consequences, especially if it goes untreated. Team HEAL's program includes pre-season health screening, conducted by doctors and affiliates of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic. The physicals encompass a full assessment of overall health and physical readiness for competition. This assessment is conducted for all high school athletes. This screening attempts to ensure that students are able to compete safely and achieve their highest level of athletic performance.

Data Collection of Injury Treatment Techniques:

Another key component of Team HEAL is the recording of data relating to the outcome of injury treatment techniques. This comprehensive tracking enhances the overall understanding of the severity and frequency of specific injuries. It also serves to expand the breadth of professional knowledge relating to care and prevention. This information provides the basis from which additional support programs for other schools, principally in the inner city, can be developed.

Team HEAL services are provided to young athletes at no cost. The objectives of the program include:

  • Providing high caliber sports medicine care to young inner city athletes
  • Acquainting young athletes with the latest advances in injury prevention techinques, including conditioning exercise physiology and nutrition
  • Applying internationally renowned expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of injured athletes - enabling their return to competitive potential quickly and safely.
  • Fostering a positive and nurturing learning environment for athletes and their parents
  • On-site medical staffing at games
  • On campus athletic training services
  • Instructional clinics
  • Pre-season health screening and medical evaluation
  • Data collection and evaluation of treatment methods
  • Sports injury presentation classes

A member of the Team HEAL medical staff is present at every home football game of Team HEAL sponsored schools. Orthapaedic residents attend home games providing immediate medical care. Should an injury occur, residents make a diagnosis in consultation with the medical staff. Injured players are transported for treatment whenever necessary. True to its mission of community service care, Team HEAL treats the athletes without regard to their individual financial circumstances.

Paring on-site medical care with the rapid availability of medical care adds up to accessibility of unmatched sports medicine expertise. Since the advent of Team HEAL, the number of injuries among the athletes has been significantly reduced. Students who are injured can now count on immediate, skillful care and assured recovery.
